The Vectis Radio 4Ps Training School also run sessions on Saturdays under the IW Council’s Short
Breaks Scheme. These are for young people between 11 & 19 years old who hold a Short Breaks
Membership Card. Short Breaks aims to increase activity opportunities for children and young
people with disabilities. It provides a break for parents/carers while their child takes part in a safe,
fun, and enjoyable activity. At Vectis Radio we do this by total immersion in radio.
On a Saturday morning between 10 a.m. & 1 p.m. We provide access to our studios and show
people how to record and edit audio, as well as contributing to a live radio show if they want to.
Typically young people are eager to get on the air live, but it is an optional part of the sessions and
there is no compulsion to do it at all. Instruction is given in how to use microphones properly and
how to run and correctly time a live broadcast. If they show any proficiency, they may be allowed
to actually run a segment of the show themselves. The sessions are not pressurised in any way, but
a live radio studio is a busy and fun environment. Most participants are amazed just how quickly
the three hours pass.
Additionally, during the session, participants record the voice sections of the “Short Breaks
Takeover” show that is broadcast for two hours on a Sunday afternoon. These can be pre-scripted
or can be researched, written, recorded & edited by the young person themselves. Again full
training is given where necessary. If someone has a longer topic to talk about, these can be turned
into podcasts and placed on the Vectis Radio webpage. Podcasts are often broadcast on other shows where relevant.
